The ‘Ulum al-Quran classes are designed to give students a wide foundation in Quranic sciences and its principles that relate to recitation, history, understanding and implementing the Quran. Students will study Tajwid (Proper Recitation/Pronunciation) of the Quran, its rules and history, the history of the Quran itself including its the revelation, collection, preservation, and also explore classical exegesis of the Quran and the different types of verses (i.e. Muhkamat, Mutashabihat, Meccan vs. Madinan).
Outcomes:
  • Enhance the understanding of the historical context of the Quran, stages of revelation, the compilation thereof, the causes of revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul), and the classification of surahs and certain verses
  • Enhance Quranic vocabulary
  • Deal with complex syntactic structures and identify specific linguistic features of Quranic Arabic (I’rab al-Quran)
  • Obtaining firm grasp of Quranic methodology and principles employed for interpretation
  • Study and understand the language of Quranic text and commentary
  • Strengthen familiarity and reading of the Quran with Tajwid

  • Appreciating the relation between the historical development of Quranic exegesis and its contextualization
  • Appreciate the Arabic syntax and semantics, linguistic form and conceptual meaning
  • Develop a methodology of textual analysis, linguistic interpretation and translation of Classical Arabic texts
